It’s a question many women in Boulder and surrounding communities are asking. While ordering abortion pills online is legal, it’s not without risks. Both the FDA and DEA caution against purchasing medications from online sources due to the lack of regulation and safety oversight. Pills shipped from providers in the U.S., Mexico, or other countries may be contaminated with dangerous substances—including fentanyl or other lethal additives.
Even in a world of Zoom calls and doorstep deliveries, reproductive health demands more than convenience. At Boulder Pregnancy Resource Center, we urge women to seek an in-person medical consultation and ultrasound before making any decisions. Your health and safety matter deeply to us. A face-to-face appointment ensures you’re informed, supported, and prepared in case of an emergency.
Why Schedule an Appointment?
A free medical consultation can:
- Confirm pregnancy viability
- Rule out ectopic pregnancy
- Determine gestational age
We do not perform or refer for abortion services, and we do not profit from your decision. Our goal is to provide accurate information and compassionate care—without pressure.
How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill is a two-step regimen used to end early pregnancy:
- First drug: Blocks progesterone, halting the pregnancy.
- Second drug: Induces contractions to expel the contents of the uterus—essentially triggering early labor.
If you change your mind after taking the first pill, reversal may be possible with prompt medical intervention.
What to Expect After Taking Both Pills
Common physical responses include:
- Bleeding, cramping, and contractions (starting 1–4 hours after the second pill, lasting days or longer)
- Heavy bleeding and blood clots
- Intense cramping
- Low-grade fever or chills
- Nausea and dizziness
Additional risks and side effects:
- Incomplete abortion
- Severe bleeding or blood clots
- High fever and infection
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or digestive pain
- Ulcers and pelvic pain
- Sepsis or uterine rupture
- Allergic reactions
If you experience a fever over 103°F, large clots, or signs of allergic reaction, call 911 immediately. Though rare, complications can be life-threatening.
Who Should Not Take the Abortion Pill?
This method is not recommended if you:
- Are more than 10 weeks pregnant
- Have an IUD in place
- Suspect an ectopic pregnancy
- Have certain medical conditions (e.g., bleeding disorders, heart disease, liver/kidney/lung issues, seizure disorders)
- Take blood thinners or specific steroid medications
- Lack access to follow-up care or emergency services
- Are allergic to the medications involved
